Pltarrnacists helping smokers to quit is a project launcl~edb y the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and the Danish Pharmaceutical Association. It promotes smoking cessation activities at community pharmacies and demonstrates how pharmacies can help smokers quit. The European Forum of Phannaceutical Associations and WHO (the EuroPharm Forum) joined the project and that created an excellent platform for the implert~ entationo f the corlcept of smoking cessation at phannacies throughout the WHO European Region. The project fits well with the mission of the EuroPhann Forum. The Forum's tasks include advocating a new role for pharmacists and pharmacies in health promotion and developing new styles of working in pharmacies. The WHO Regional Office for Europe has made a firm commitment to work to reduce the health damage caused by tobacco in its Actiort Plon for a Tobacco-free Europe. The Plan urges international and national, associations of pharmacists to launch initiatives to promote nonsmoking among their members and to adopt a proactive approach to the general public. Pharmacists helping anokers to quit is phannacists' contribution towards the Action Plan. Pharmocisrs helpirig smokers m quit combines pharmacist-led support groups at the cotnmunity pharmacy with the use of nicotine substitution therapy. The programme includes six meetings at the pharmacy. Smokers who want to stop smoking pay a fee to take part in the group. The concept was tested in a demonstration project at 20 community pharmacies ttuoughout Denmark in spring 1992. The participating pharmacists completed a compulsory training course before starting smoking cessation groups. Since then the project has been expanded to other Danish pharmacies. About 20% of Danish pharmacies now offer smoking cessation services to the public. The project showed how partners can work together very effectively, each providing a unique contribution. This guide spells out how phannacists, phmnacies and their associations can implement a progrmne to help stnokers quit. It is mainly intended for associations, to help them to launch and coordinate a national programme for smoking cessation at pharmacies. The recommendations are derived from the experience gained in Denmark. We know well that no practice can be transferred directly from one European country to another; the programme must be adapted to conditions and structures in each country or region. But there are many common features and the enthusiasm to run a programme for the benefit of smokers remains the same thuoughout the WHO European Region.
